The Relaxo Files

A weekly-ish blog of progress on the Captain Relaxo recording project. Partly for myself. I want to be able to see improvement over time. It is also for those who have an interest in the project or who enjoy Captain Relaxo music, so they can see some of the workings behind the scenes.

This week has been a busy week for music. I continued vinyl collecting finding inspiration from Phonica record store in Soho in London. I've also started on my mission of collecting my favourite 100 albums on vinyl. Two more collected this week, Elbow - Cast of Thousands, and The National - Boxer.

In terms of recording, I've almost finished the song The Devil Working Overtime and have started working on recording some of my older tracks, Juliette, Moon June Spoon and Fool Myself. Looking for inspiration I have also been playing through some of my old fave songs like Temptation by Tom Waits. I feel very lucky to have the time to explore and create music.

This week I recorded the parts for the song Marianne. I have also started chronicling the journey of writing and recording music, by trying to semi-regularly post my progress to various social media networks.

It isn't something I feel particularly comfortable with and would much prefer to hide away and ignore the world. Now, however, I am trying to view the process of involving myself with these social networks, and with actually being involved with people online, as an online diary of sorts.

I find it really hard to come to grips with different software packages. I've started using Harrison Mixbus for mixing, and Luna by Universal Audio for tracking. After ten years of using Logic Pro X it has been a steep learning curve. I've been especially struggling trying to edit midi files in Mixbus.

The mixbus pic illustrates my problems, I don't know the shortcuts to even move tracks, so it is a real learning process.
